1. Pick the Right Fiber
The fiber of any carpet tile is the most important factor determining how it will look and feel underfoot. Choosing the right fiber material actually decides how long your carpet installation will last.Â
Nylon is the best fiber option for high traffic residential and busy commercial spaces. If you have kids and pets in the home, then buy nylon carpet. It has excellent resilience and strength against routine wear. After you step on it easily springs back into its shape. It is also outstanding in resisting stains.Â
Polypropylene (Olefin) is a budget-friendly as well as tough material. It is not as strong as nylon under heavy walking, but it is best at dealing with moisture and color fading. If you require stylish, durable carpets for basements or home offices, then olefin carpets are perfect.Â
You can also go with wool, which is a luxury alternative. It is 100% natural and beautifully soft. The best part is it is environmentally friendly and gives a sense of royalty. Remember it’s an expensive option and need peorper caring. So it works best in low-traffic rooms like bedrooms.Â
2. Check Yarn Density (How Packed It Is)
The most common mistake is checking only face weight and thickness while determining the durability of your carpet tile. You have to see how close packed together the fibers are.
To check the density, you can perform the pencil test. Push your finger or a pencil down through the carpet and try to touch its backing. If it is easy to reach the bottom grid, then the carpet tile is not durable.Â
Remember, when yarns are closely packed together, carpet tile is strong and hardwearing. When you walk on them, they do not bend or break. Carpet tiles with high density also look brand new and beautiful for years.
3. Evaluate the Backing (The Foundation)
The hard layer on the back of carpet tile is what we call backing. You can not see it after carpet installation, but it is important to keep your carpet tiles straight and intact in place.Â
For busy commercial buildings, use hard backing (Vinyl or Fiberglass). It serves as a strong shield. It also prevents your carpet tile from shrinking and expanding, as well as curling up at the corners with changing weather.Â
The second option is carpet tiles with cushioned backing. This option has a layer of foam attached to the bottom. It feels much softer under your feet. It also minimizes sound beautifully and turns your spaces calm and comfortable.Â
4. Balance Style and Practicality (Colors and Patterns)
Imagine investing a large amount in light-colored carpet tiles that look really beautiful and stylish. But after a month of muddy shoes, spills, and dropped food, it turns dull and loses all its elegance. So it is a bad idea to pick carpet just based on its appearance and visual appeal.Â
If you want your carpet tiles to perform for a long time, then pick busy patterns and muti colored deisgens. You can choose tiles with dark and medium mixed shades forming a camouflage appearance. They are best at hiding dirt and wear between cleanings. This option is both stylish and durable for busy areas like hallways and entryways or living rooms.Â
If you like solid colors, then use them on quite zones. Clean and solid shades work best in rooms that are not used constantly, such as guest rooms or formal dens.
5. Buy Extra Stock (Your Backup Plan)
Easy replacement is the feature that makes carpet tile stand out from other carpet flooring. If any tiles get damaged, you can easily replace it wth the new one. There is no need to change the whole floor, unlike wall to wall carpet.Â
Always purchase 10 to 15% more tiles than the actual requirement. Purchase all at a similar time. Factory machines dye carpets in huge batches or “dye lots”. Even if you get the exact same style next year, the color shade might be a little different. If you store tiles from the exact same batch, then you can easily fix any future damage in a few minutes. The new replacement will also blend perfectly with the existing one.
