Collect the Tools

Before starting the installation process, gather all these necessary tools:

  • Carpet Padding (thickness should not exceed 1/2 inch)
  • Tack Strips
  • Carpet Grippers
  • Heavy-duty Staple Gun or Staples (9/16 inch)

Cut the Carpet Padding

Now lay down the carpet padding positioned against the back of the riser on the tread. Staple it securely to the wood.

Start from the bottom or top of the stairs, based on your chosen method. Neatly lay the carpet into place. Push it tightly into the crease where the tread meets the riser. Then staple it firmly under the lip of the stair nose.

Stretch and Secure

Now pull the carpet taut across the tread, engaging it into the tack strips with the help of a carpet knee kicker or stair tool. Staple the top of the carpet firmly onto the riser and continue this pattern all the way up or down the stairs. 

Finishing the Edges

At last, use a sharp utility knife and trim excess carpet at the sides or corners. With a stair tool, tuck raw edges smoothly into the wall and secure with staples.
